BOEGOEBERG 4X4

ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR 4 x 4

DESTINATIONS IN THE WESTERN CAPE

15 – 17 JUNE 2024

NAMED AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 TRAILS IN SOUTH AFRICA ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS

& A CAMPSITE OFFERING GREAT FACILITIES

The Boegoeberg 4x4 trail is situated on the farm “Lambertshoek”, in the “Engelsman se Berge”, overlooking Graafwater, Elands Bay, Lambert’s Bay and Clanwilliam.  Trail owner Sybrie de Beer has been committed from the start to making Boegoeberg 4x4 an eco-friendly, excellently maintained, affordable, family orientated venue, ensuring maximum pleasure for the whole family, with the minimum impact on the environment.

Boegoeberg has attained a well-deserved “Top Ten” status in many Outdoor Magazines on numerous occasions. The ever-growing camp, with top-class ablutions, offers enough shade with grass underfoot, power and water points throughout the camp, a huge sandstone swimming pool, a family friendly lapa with two indoor braais, a large communal open air outdoor braai and a kiosk satisfying most requirements of campers. Definitely one of the best campsites and trails in the Western Cape.

The need to get to the buchu, to harvest and transport the harvested buchu down to the farm below, is how the many mountain tracks originated. The old donkey wagon trails, transporting the buchu, have been transformed into a well-planned and well-maintained, extremely popular 4x4 trail, climbing high into the “Engelsman se Berge” to the “Platklip Viewpoint” where a panoramic view awaits all. The last section of the trail leading to the viewpoint will ensure your adrenalin levels are higher than normal. Here you will experience narrow, tricky sections, interesting cross-axle obstacles and having to choose the correct line of approach when negotiating the steps before reaching the lookout. Through this section of the trail, it would be advantageous for your co-driver to either guide you through some of the obstacles or keep an alert lookout for you on the left side of your vehicle to ensure your safe passage.

The panoramic view includes looking down on the white dunes of the Lambert’s Bay 4x4 trail, the pointy mountain at Eland’s Bay, the many potatoes circles of the Sandveld and many other well-known landmarks in the Cederberg Mountains and surrounding area. During the wet rainy season this section of the trail can become impossible to drive. On the way down to the camp you will encounter a long rocky descent. Here it is particularly important to follow the correct descending procedures, irrelevant whether you drive a manual or automatic vehicle. Your guide will be on hand to supply hints and tips and answer questions. The rocky descent is followed by a steep technical, challenging, tricky ascent. Negotiating this section, it will be important to choose the correct line of approach. Here once again the guide will be on hand with hints and tips and to answer questions.  Adrenalin levels will again be quite a bit higher than normal. Having negotiated this last serious obstacle for the day we will make our way back to the camp where well-deserved leisure time will be enjoyed by all. The mountain section is popular because it will keep drivers alert throughout the route, with many photo opportunities for passengers.

The latest addition to the trail is the route in a riverbed on the farm, also known as The Canyon. This section was not planned but was formed when heavy rains and floods washed away a vineyard. The popularity of this section is due to the numerous escape routes taking you to safety. Here it is suggested that all drivers first walk the obstacle before driving it. Driving in the riverbed you will require a guide at more than one obstacle, ensuring a safe passage. Your driving skills and knowing your vehicle’s dimensions and its capabilities will be tested. There are difficult enough obstacles to really get your adrenalin pumping and tease Mr Ego to the limit. This is always a very popular section and will ensure many highlights and photo opportunities.

The farm is also home to the largest hand-crafted Sandstone Mine in South Africa, where sandstone building blocks are still handcrafted to perfection. The handcrafted sandstone mined here has been used at very well-known destinations. More of this information will be shared with you during our visit. You may even consider purchasing a few square meters of sandstone for that special braai or fireplace you always wanted.  Other sources of income are Rooibos tea, which is well-known to the area and Buchu, which is harvested annually high up in the mountains.
