PAPKUILSFONTEIN
IN THE NORTHERN CEDERBERG

MAKE USE OF THE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS FOR A LONG WEEKEND
21 TO 24 SEPTEMBER 2024

Papkuilsfontein

Papkuilsfontein is situated in the northern Cederberg near the well-known Bushman’s Cave Bergteater. It is still an active working farm where rooibos tea and sheep are being farmed and has been in the Kotze family for many generations. Papkuilsfontein has a beautifully laid out 12km circular hiking trail taking you through lovely sandstone rock formations and fynbos and past a beautiful waterfall. Enjoy your hiker’s lunch in solitude while gazing down an incredible gorge on the farm.

Don’t despair, during the weekend we will also drive the popular Bushman’s Cave 4x4 trail now closed to the public. The 4x4 trail consists of three sections where participants have the option of returning to camp after each section of the trail. The Karookop section of the trail is where it all starts, where “Coenie-se-Dip” will test your driving and negotiating skills, having to choose the right line of approach. This is closely followed by the challenging “Polly Shorts” and the name says it all. A challenging loose twist and turn steep climbing section taking you to halfway up Karookop. Having negotiated the last challenge to the top of Karookop, an amazing view awaits participants. From the Hantam and Roggeveld Mountains in the far distance in the Tankwa Karoo to the Sittadel Mountain in the central Cederberg and the many low-lying farms forming a beautiful picture and well-worth the challenge to reach the top. The next section is known as the “Sandbult or Kerneels-se-Kinkels”. A sandy section to play but will catch you out if you do not concentrate, giving you time to select different gear selections and getting to know your vehicle. The last section of the trail is called “Klippekou” and the name says it all. A formidable challenging section that will require drivers to first walk the obstacle, this helps them make the right choice of line to drive and to select the right gear selection. Remember after each section of the trail, participants have the option of returning to camp if they so wish.

Cederberg 4x4, some twenty odd years ago, built an access road on the farm Papkuilfontein, down to the dry riverbed of the Brandewyn River and drove to the junction with the Doring River. During this long weekend participants will have the option of joining the group to back track our tracks of twenty odd years ago to see if this track is still driveable and enjoy a lunch at the junction of the Brandewyn and Doring Rivers. On this day the owner of the farm will accompany the group, clearly showing them the way of a track not used for many years. Alternatively, you may choose to do the hiking trail, explore the farm on your mountain bike or just relax at the camp.

Consider making use of the public holidays in making this a four-day long weekend. Invite your friends and join Cederberg 4x4 on this epic trip tracing back footprints of more than twenty odd years ago. Remember to bring your mountain bike for the weekend. To secure your place contact Coenie via return mail or on one of the numbers listed below for a booking form.
