21 – 25 March 2018

Bonniedale Holiday Farm   a 1650ha Fynbos farm situated in the Outeniqua Mountains between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, surrounded by the Attaquaskloof Nature Reserve – the perfect getaway for the whole family. Apart from the amazing 4x4 trails there are other activities, such as horse riding, the Flying Fox “Foefie” slide, canoeing on the dam and the mountain hike to the secret mountain with it’s many idyllic streams with crystal clear water forming natural rock pools ideal for swimming.

Exiting the forest there will be a very steep climb back to the plateau.  From there we will follow the Sunbird trail, with another steep climb, to the top of the mountain. Here breathtaking views of the farmhouse below and surrounding mountains awaits participants. What goes up must come down. The return route will follow the contours of the mountain until we reach the John Tom Pass, driving a very steep rocky descent ending in a shallow river, with a short route back to the camp. At some of the more difficult obstacles there are either escape routes or any driver will have the option of turning around at the more challenging sections.

Looking up at the surrounding mountains with their many rocky outcrops, valleys and ridges you realize why Bonniedale Holiday Farm is so well-known for its large variety of plants (“fynbos”), mammals and birds. It is a paradise for ornithologists (bird watchers) throughout the year, but you will also find other animals living in their natural surroundings, such as rheebok, steenbok, bushbuck, klipspringer, baboons and porcupines. That special moment of being in the right place at the right time - the sighting of kudu, hyena or leopard is not impossible. This is a trail filled with history that your guide will share with you while on the trail.

The 4x4 trails

Nico Hesterman bought Bonniedale farm from an Irish family about 20 years ago and decided to turn it into a Holiday farm. Bonniedale was the first 4x4 trail in the Southern Cape and was the founder member of the Southern Cape Route Owners Forum, which represents 22 trails in the area. He used his Ford F250 4x4 to build the Goliatsberg, Grootkloof and Sunbird 4x4 trails on the farm. He then cleared the old Ox wagon route until it was possible for all modern 4x4 vehicles to negotiate. Bonniedale 4x4 Trail has been rated by various outdoor magazines as one of the top ten trail destinations in Southern Africa out of 500 trails listed. There are approximately 35 km of well-maintained 4x4 trails divided into two 17½ km sections, offering extremely steep ascents and descent challenges. They offer the driver and passengers a challenge and a reward of magnificent views from the top of the Outeniqua and Langeberg mountains.

The Ox wagon trail starts at the campsite, traverses a rocky shallow river and then climbs steeply to the top of the mountain where it ends on a flat plateau at an old toll house.  It is mostly loose rock and shale. From the plateau we will follow the Footloose trail with a steep descent and then a short easy piece through an old pine tree forest.

The campsite has hot and cold ablution facilities. Hot water is gas generated and the light in the bathrooms is solar powered. No electricity is available at the campsite.  There is also a swimming pool near the campsite and firewood can be purchased at the farmhouse.

Chalets are available should you not wish to camp. Contact Marina on 021 910 1363 for availability as there are limited chalets on the farm. For the chalet option, an immediate deposit of 50% for the chalet will be required as Cederberg 4x4 has to pay a 50% deposit for chalet accommodation to Bonniedale Guest Farm upon booking.
