DAMON 4X4 NIGHT DRIVE
EXPERIENCE AN AMAZING NIGHT DRIVE IN THE FOOT HILLS OF THE LANGEBERG MOUNTAINS
JUST NORTH OF WORCESTER
25 FEBRUARY 2017
NEW MOON (DARK MOON), SPECTACULAR STAR GAZING, EXCITING NIGHT DRIVING, ENDING WITH NAIL-BITING GHOST STORIES
The Night Drive
Any night drive, wherever and whenever it takes place, is always very popular and an experience not to be missed. You might have driven the 4x4 trail before during the day on more than one occasion, but driving it at night places a completely new perspective on the trail. The trail is filled with mystique, while the rear lights of the vehicle in front of you seems to be the only lifeline at that moment. Steep ascents and descents that are normally easy to drive during the day now become more challenging as your depth of perception is limited to the range of your headlights. Various technical sections will be encountered during the night drive where the help of the front passenger will be required to check the clearance on the front left of the vehicle on more than one occasion. The most challenging of the trail will be the steep ascents and descents to negotiate in the dark. Full concentration will be required while experiencing higher than normal adrenalin levels. Upon completion of the trail we will head for the lapa at the dam where, depending on the wind, we will light a communal fire and share some nail-biting ghost stories. Everyone is invited to bring a ghost story to share around the camp fire under the darkness of New Moon.
The trail is situated in the foothills at the start of the Langeberg Mountains, just north of Worcester in the Boland, only 60 minutes from Cape Town. The trail is named after a notorious sheep thief, Damon, who stole sheep and pigs from the farmers in the Worcester region, taking them back to his secret cave somewhere in the Langeberg Mountains. To date this secret cave has never been found or positively identified. He became a legend in the early 1900’s due to his activities.
The trail is 13km long and will require approximately 2 - 3 hours to complete. It traverses the mountains between Hangkloof and Boskloof and consists mainly of Karoo soil and shale. Various obstacles, with interesting ascents and descents, will test your driving skills and keep you on your toes, none of which should dent your vehicle or your ego. Remember the old saying of what goes up must come down and it is after visiting the viewpoint that a technical descent will be encountered, where 1st gear, low-range will be the order of the day. The Damon 4x4 trail is not a very demanding trail on drivers or vehicles, but well worth visiting more than once. Having negotiated most of the obstacles and heading for the lapa and the dam we will stop at a remote cottage for an “ertjie” stop. This remote cottage is an ideal place to start the sharing of the ghost stories. The activities, picnic dinner, self-catered braai (depending on the wind) for the evening will end at the lapa situated next to the dam where ghost stories will be shared. Participant will be able to depart at their own time.
All information supplied in the agenda is given in good faith by Cederberg 4x4 and compiled from the latest information available at the time. The activity times, as indicated on the agenda, are subject to change without notice and at the sole discretion of the guide.
