16 – 18 June 2017

Donkieskraal is a unique destination in the heart of the Sandveld near Leipoldtville on the West Coast. It is home to a 1800ha private game reserve in the heart of “Potato Country”. Pieter Laubscher, the owner of the farm Sandberg, one of the top potato producing farms in South Africa, had a dream to have his own private game reserve on the farm. It started small, with only a few animals, and has grown to over 1400ha with numerous species of game roaming freely. Any person can be proud of being the brain child behind this unique accomplishment. It is because dreams where realised and shared with others that we as Cederberg 4x4 are privileged to make Donkieskraal the home base for the weekend activities. On Sunday morning we will enjoy a game viewing drive through the reserve in search of the numerous game species as well as  the  two giraffes. All the tracks in the reserve are soft sand tracks that will have to be negotiated. The sandy tracks will keep the drivers on their toes while passengers can be on the lookout for the numerous game species roaming in the reserve. This popular Sunday morning game drive always ensures the weekend ending on a high note.

Donkieskraal camp is set in the heart of the game reserve on the farm. During our visit we will enjoy the shelter of a large thatched-roofed lapa overlooking a swimming pool to be used during the warm summer days. The lapa, with a large built-in braai, will form the centre point of each evening’s activities. The camp offers grass underfoot with limited shade and neat clean ablution facilities with electricity and water points throughout the camp.

The Dunes at Lambert’s Bay

This trail is situated in a naturally formed dune area of approx. 350 hectares. It does not grow in size or move as many other dune areas have the tendency to do.  The dunes are unique to this area and offer participants various forms of challenges, under controlled conditions, without any major impact on the environment, while ensuring maximum pleasure for all. You will have the opportunity to experiment with your vehicle by using different gear selections and just getting to know your vehicle better, as well as your own limitations and knowing when not to overstep the line.  Some of the key factors in getting over the dunes involve power, momentum and tyre pressure. As the day progresses and your technique and confidence grows, those seemingly impossible early morning dunes don’t look all that daunting. The day ends with interesting challenges at the famous camel dunes and a dune climb challenge. Escape options are always available as it is not compulsory to drive all the big dunes.
