27 August – 17 September 2018

During our visit we will endeavour to spend as much time as possible along the shore of the lake. We will visit five campsites, all situated directly along the shore of the lake, spending three nights at each campsite. The short distances between campsites will mean an early arrival at the next camp. This will ensure that maximum time is spent at each campsite, enjoying the many activities and amenities on offer along the shore. Sunga Moyo near Nkhata Bay will be the most northern point of our tour, with Palm Beach just north of Liwonde the most southern point along the lake.

Peace of mind

It is important for people joining us on the Malawi overland adventure, in true expedition style, to have peace of mind that the rendezvous is in close proximity to the South African border when heading north. Thus the reason why we will rendezvous at Norma Jeane’s Lakeview Resort situated next to the Zimbabwe Ruins approximately 25km from Masvingo in southern Zimbabwe. The town of Masvingo is approximately 300km from Beitbridge border post on one of the major tar roads, in good condition, leading north. Departing from the rendezvous we will drive in convoy, ensuring safety in numbers, for the duration of the trip. The Malawi overland adventure will end once again at Norma Jeane’s Lakeview resort from where we will depart in convoy heading for the Beitbridge border post en-route to South Africa.

Lake Malawi

This vast body of crystal clear water fringed by beaches of golden sand is not only a scenic wonderland but it provides water sport opportunities. Kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving and water skiing are just some of the lake activities available to visitors. The fishing villages are plentiful on the lake’s shore as the redbreast tilapia, kampango, chemba, catfish and many other species are vital to the area’s economy and the abundant fish harvest allows for excellent fishing conditions. Alternatively relax at the campsite, visit local markets or explore the surrounding area by foot or vehicle.

Malawi, one of the friendliest countries in Africa and still wonderfully untouched by mass tourism, has a massive diversity of beautiful landscapes. The highest peaks in Malawi touch 3000m while the lowest point is barely above sea level. This range of altitudes in a small area helps to make the landscape of Malawi one of the most varied in all Africa. It is generally a green, lush country, with plateaus, highlands, forests, mountains, plains, escarpments and dramatic river valleys. The variety of scenery is a major attraction to visitors.

Our rendezvous will be at Norma Jeane’s Lakeview Resort near the town of Masvingo and the Zimbabwe Ruins in southern Zimbabwe. The camp is set against the mountain with great views over Lake Kyle. Plan your early arrival giving you enough time to visit the famous and well-known Great Zimbabwe Ruins or you may consider visiting the ruins on your return from Malawi.

En-route to and from Malawi
Departing from the rendezvous we will spend only two nights on the road before we reach the first destination along the shore of Lake Malawi. On our return trip we will once again only spend two nights on the road before reaching Norma Jeane’s Lakeview Resort near Masvingo in southern Zimbabwe where the trip officially ends. The two nights en-route to and from Malawi will require setting camp in Harare in Zimbabwe and Tete in Mozambique. Both campsites en-route are safe and offer good facilities.

TIME   :  ARRIVE any time during the day. Plan your arrival time to replenish supplies in Masvingo.

On our previous visit to Malawi we gathered sufficient information to select the best destinations along Lake Malawi where we will spend three nights at five different destinations. This equates to spending 15 x days along the shore of Lake Malawi. Our rendezvous will be at Norma Jeane’s Lakeview Resort in southern Zimbabwe near Masvingo. Plan an early arrival giving you enough time to visit the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, replenish fuel and food in Masvingo. One night will be spend near Harare before crossing the border into Mozambique and setting camp in Tete. The following day we will enter Malawi and head for our first of five destinations along the shore of Lake Malawi. All our camps are within a stone throw from the shore ensuring maximum exposure to what the lake has to offer. Enough time will be on hand to visit some of the local markets on foot, enjoy the facilities of the lodges we will be using, relax in the camp, enjoy snorkel diving, hire a yacht and visit one of the many islands in the lake. The pristine white beaches call for long walks, also giving you the option of buying fish from some of the locals.

Ensure your vehicle is refuelled prior to arriving at the rendezvous.  We require all vehicles to be able to complete a minimum distance off 600km before needing to refuel.  Calculate your vehicle’s fuel consumption and requirements and plan accordingly.

Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi’s electricity supply is based on the 220-240 volt system using the “British Type” square bayonet three-pin plugs as well as South African 15amp plugs. We suggest you carry both plug options during the trip. Always advisable to carry long electricity extension leads to be used at the campsites.

Good cell phone coverage will be experienced throughout our journey. Local sim cards are readily available at most destinations we will be visiting.

Everyone must be totally self-sufficient for the duration of the Malawi overland adventure. Once in Malawi an abundance of fresh fish and fresh produce will be available at the various destinations we will visit along the shore of the Malawi Lake. As we will not be visiting any of the mayor towns/cities in Malawi to replenish supplies, we suggest you consider arriving a day early at the rendezvous in Masvingo where supplies can be replenished at a well-stocked Pick & Pay/GM Store.
