NAMIB DESERT

29 DECEMBER 2018 - 2 JANUARY 2019

A NAMIB DESERT TRIP WITHIN SPERGEBIET 1 & 2 STARTING AT ELIZABETH BAY IN THE SOUTH

Something New

Most of us have heard of or completed the Lüderitz to Walvis Bay trip through the Namib Desert, spent New Year at Saddle Hill, done the Faces of the Namib or driven the Skeleton Coast north of Swakopmund. Cederberg 4x4 now offers something completely new. A four night trip in the Namib Naukluft Park, starting in Spergebiet 1 then continuing into Spergebiet No 2, visiting the Koichab Pan, Koichab River, the Kirch Mountains, with amazing views over the Tiras Mountains and the Gunsbewys grasslands, is a must for any desert or sand lover. No other vehicle tracks, people or vehicles will be seen while on this trip. We will enter the Namib Desert on the service road that leads to the Koichab Pan, starting approximately halfway between Aus and Lüderitz on the B2. It is not the same road used for all the other trips to the desert by other companies. The ruins of a transport wagon used and left behind in the First World War in the battle between the British troops and the German Schutztruppe, as well as the wreck of a burnt out Toyota Prado will be some of the interesting landmarks to be seen on the trip The driver of the Prado made a mistake while reversing by hanging the vehicles back wheels up over a dry grass mound. The vehicle was stuck and the exhaust ignited the grass with catastrophic results.

The trip will start with a dinner (included in the price) in Luderitz at a venue to be announced closer to the trip. Accommodation this evening and breakfast will be for your own account and arrangement. Speak to the Cederberg 4x4 office for advice in this regard. The following morning the convoy will head south into Spergebiet 1 to Elizabeth Bay, the second largest town in Spergebiet 1 & 2 during the diamond era. Many points of interest, like the old casino, mining equipment and mining plant that was used in the diamond era, can still be seen. Having spent the morning in Spergebiet 1 we will head for Spergebiet 2 via the tar road (B2) and head north approximately halfway between Lüderitz and Aus where we will leave the tar. From here we will head north over the Namib plains, through the Kirchberg mountain range next to the Koichab depression to our first camp in the dry riverbed of the Koichab River. Camp will be set against the backdrop of a high dune.

Dinner will be enjoyed under a star-filled sky. Day two will start with breakfast and is filled with exhilarating dune driving with many opportunities to capture that special photo of the trip. Camp will be set at camp “Rock Me” surrounded by dunes and amazing clear skies. Dinner will be served, followed by a social communal camp fire. Day three after breakfast we will stay in the dunes and after some exciting dune driving, time will be set aside for some exciting sand boarding. The sand boarding is always a highlight for young and old and very quickly marks will be made to see who can sand board the furthest. Our camp for this evening has been named camp “Nkandla” and you will only find out the reason why once you arrive at the camp. Once again a dinner will be served followed by a social evening around the campfire. After breakfast on day four we will head for “Ute” opposite the Tiras Mountains. To reach the camp we will travel east in the Koichab River to the boundary of the Namib Desert and the Tiras Mountains. Still some exciting dune driving will take place and the wreck of the burnt out Prado will be seen along the way. Dinner with the normal Cederberg 4x4 formalities will take place around the social campfire. On day five after breakfast we will break camp for the last time on this trip and drive through the dunes and reach for the D707 approximately 100km from Aus. It is here that the trip officially ends and all can head off in their own direction. There are many beautiful campsites in that vicinity should you be interested in spending more time in Namibia.

General

We are sure many of you dream of spending New Year far away from the maddening crowd, shopping centres and the normal daily routines of life.  The Cederberg 4x4 New Year’s trip to the Namib Desert, starting 29 December 2018, will give you the opportunity to realize this dream. Spoil your family and loved ones and join other like-mined people on a trip of a lifetime.

On crossing the border into Namibia one experiences an exhilarating feeling of “YES!!!!” now I’m on holiday.   This feeling is strengthened when either spending time in total tranquillity along the Orange River (Gariep), at Klein Aus Vista or in Lüderitz, your last food and fuel replenishment point. During dinner the feeling of uncertainty, yet excitement, will build up to the next day when you will be experiencing and driving some of the large sand dunes of the Namib Desert. Having had the privilege of driving through the Namib Desert on numerous occasions, I guarantee you will feel the build-up of excitement when tyres are deflated before entering the Namib Desert.  In the dunes of the Namib Desert, your priorities suddenly change and the only important point at that stage is to keep the vehicle in front of you in sight at all times.  It seems that the vehicle in front of you is the only life-line with the outside world before reality steps in and you realize that all vehicles in the convoy have radio communication and you are part of a convoy that will be driving some of the highest dunes in the Namib Desert. Each day will ensure its own highlights, from exciting dune driving, breath-taking views offering endless photo opportunities, spotting of the desert Oryx to hearing interesting history about the diamond era of Spergebiet No 1 and 2.

Life is a journey; make the most of the ride!
