SCHEPPIE SAUS 4X4 near Redelinghuys
A HIDDEN GEM SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS BEHIND OOM PAUL-SE-BERG
WHERE VINES, ROOIBOS RIBBON FARMING AND PATATO CIRCLES BLEND AS ONE
9 – 11 NOVEMBER 2018
ROOIBOS, VINES AND SPECTACULAR GORGES
The 1500ha farm Moutonshoek is an active rooibos and grape farm of which only 500ha is used for farming. The balance of 1000ha consists mainly of rocky sandstone outcrops and mountains not suitable for farming. It is in these mountains that the Scheppie Saus is located and where we will be spending the weekend. The drive from the farmhouse to the campsite is some four kilometres and is 4x2 friendly. Let us see who can find where the name Scheppie Saus originated from. Two gorges form a perfect V in the mountain and it is on this V, where the two rivers from the gorges meet, where the campsite is situated. The camp is a well deserved four star campsite offering sufficient shade and grass underfoot. The new ablutions consists of six gas heated showers and six flushing toilets. As the camp is surrounded by mountains, the natural home to baboons, we request all to adhere to one of the rules of 4x4ing namely; “WHAT WE TAKE IN, WE TAKE OUT”. This will ensure that nothing is left behind in the camp to attract the baboons.
The trail starts at the campsite and yes, we do have to drive through one of the rivers to continue on the trail. Depending on the time of the year we visit this trail, it could be relatively easy or seemingly impossible during the wet winter months, so ensure never to get caught napping. Each season will offer enough challenges en-route to satisfy the needs of drivers and passengers. Numerous river crossings will be encountered during the day and it is always advisable to bring the faithful gumboots along, irrelevant the time of year Scheppie Saus is visited. Lunch will be enjoyed at a very interesting, history-filled little house with unique floors. More information will be shared over lunch before the mountain section of the trail will be driven. This section of the trail demands your full attention as numerous rocky sections will be encountered, as well as narrow sections between very big rocks. Here your passengers will be a great help, guiding you through these narrow sections. A steep downhill will then be driven, followed by a river crossing in the other big gorge, before having to make a three point turn, for maximum momentum, before returning to the camp. Being a mountain trail, the golden rule of 4x4ing will have to be adhered to at all times, namely; as slow as possible as fast as necessary, ensuring maximum safety for passengers and vehicles. A trail well worth visiting in every season of the year to experience the beauty it has to offer. Take this opportunity to make this your first visit, followed by many more.
As we are only leaving at 10h30, the energetic early birds will have the opportunity to follow a pathway up part of one of the gorges to beautiful waterfalls and natural pools. When we leave we will drive various gravel, off-the-beaten-track roads to Paternoster, where an optional lunch can be enjoyed for your own account. Depart from Paternoster at your own time for home. You might even want to consider staying over at Tietiesbaai before returning home.
