SEARCHING FOR SNOW

THROUGH THE KAROO AND TANKWA KAROO
IN TRUE OVERLANDING ADVENTURE STYLE

21 to 23 JULY 2017

A FAMILY-FRIENDLY OVERLAND ADVENTURE WITH THREE ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS TO SATISFY THE NEEDS OF ALL

General

The aim of the weekend will be to search for snow while visiting places not visited on a regular basis by Cederberg 4x4, with base camp at De Mond in the Tankwa Karoo, on the bank of the Doring River. Adding to the adventure of the weekend will be the fact that no exact route will be followed. The route that will be followed will be finalized based on the latest snowfall information available in the days prior to the snow searching weekend. The weekend adventure starts at the Tankwa Padstal 70km from Ceres on the way to Calvinia. Departing from the rendezvous we will head for De Mond campsite, where we will set camp for two nights, where many history-filled stories of yesteryear will be shared. En-route to the camp we will drive a section of the longest gravel road in South Africa between Ceres and Calvinia.

Route

The route that will be followed will depend on the latest information on snowfalls in the area. This will also determine the difficulty level of 4x4 driving for the weekend. Names like Ganaga Pass, Ouberg Pass and Middelpos will be mentioned many times during the planning of the route to follow for the day. These are names of places not visited on a regular basis.

A lunch stop will be made at the Ganaga lodge where coffee and rusks will be served for you own account. Two well-known passes will be driven, ensuring amazing views over the low-lying escarpment. The reports of snow in and around Ceres and the Matroosberg will determine the return route to Cape Town on the Sunday. In short, this is a weekend that offers something for everybody, from three accommodation options, driving at least five different mountain passes and stopping in the town of Middelpos. This is a perfect opportunity to dust off your road maps and outdoor information books and join fellow Cederberg families on a weekend of snow searching.

So pack your warm clothes, gas heaters and come join Richard, Ethelia and Jake on a weekend of over-landing adventure.

Accommodation

Weekend Options
Option 1

This one is for the hard-core campers. You will have the option of using your ground tent or your rooftop tent at the campsite we will visit the weekend.

Option 2

This option is for the Off-Road Caravan and Trailer owners. Here is your opportunity to use that luxury camping equipment you invested in to spoil the whole family while spending time in the great outdoors searching for snow.

Option 3

The final option for the snow searching weekend will be to make use of the chalet accommodation at the campsite we will be visiting.

De Mond - Camping and Chalet

Camp will be set for Friday and Saturday nights at De Mond campsite on the bank of the Doring River in the Tankwa Karoo. This is another gem not known to many people. A dam wall in the Doring River ensures that there is always water in the dam, making it very user friendly for swimming, fishing and other water sport activities. The camp offers sufficient shade and lovely green grass underfoot and water points throughout the camp. Full ablution facilities with hot / cold showers and flush toilets are available in the camp. The chalets are rustic, clean and tidy with bedding, cutlery, crockery, small stove and fridge included. Please remember to bring own towels. Two of the chalets have their own ablutions. All other chalets have a central ablution to be shared. The chalets can accommodate between 4 & 6 people per chalet. Bookings for the chalets work on a first-come-first-serve basis.

29 MHz TWO WAY RADIOS

Communication between participating vehicles on any 4x4 excursion is important for many reasons.  It ensures the safety of drivers, passengers and vehicles while on a 4x4 trail, where drivers can communicate with one another as regards to their location and situation, not to mention the interesting information that is shared with participants.

We suggest all 4x4 vehicles that don’t have a 29MHz two-way radio hire one from us at a nominal fee of
R200-00 for this excursion.

Should you be hiring a 29MHz radio, please ensure that your lighter socket is working.  If you intend running more than one item from the lighter socket, be sure to have double adapter handy as well as spare fuses for this excursion.

Should you wish to make a once-off investment and purchase a 29MHz radio, we have negotiated a special deal for all Cederberg 4x4 participants.  For more information contact Marina on 021 910 1363.

NB:  If your vehicle is fitted with a 29MHz radio please make sure that channels 1, 14 and 23 are open and working for this excursion.
