CAMP TORPEDO & TIERKLOOF 4X4
ENJOY AN ADRENALIN-FILLED DAY ON THE TRAIL
COMBINED WITH A WEEKEND CAMPING ON THE BANK OF THE BREEDE RIVER
13 – 15 APRIL 2018
HE CAMP OVERLOOKS TWO NATURAL POOLS IN THE RIVER THAT CAN BE USED FOR FISHING AND SWIMMING WHILE SPENDING TIME IN A WELL-SHADED CAMP
Torpedo campsite is situated on the bank of the Breede River only 8km past Rawsonville. The camp offers green grass underfoot with ample shade for campers and has clean running water with an ablution block offering flush toilets and hot/cold showers. Two natural pools in the river ensure good fishing and swimming even if the river is not running. Bring the fishing rods to catch that big one.
The Tierkloof 4x4 trail is situated in the Cidos Mountains near Rawsonville, with a beautiful view over the Brandvlei Dam, Worcester and the Breede River Valley below. The route is also known as the “Donkie Kar” Trail as it was used to collect wood in the mountains about 180 years ago. The current 4x4 trail follows the original route, which can be clearly identified from aerial photographs of the area, where workers used carts drawn by oxen to gain access to the higher lying sections of the mountains.
The trail traverses predominantly through Fynbos with regular sighting of Dassies, Steenbokkies, Duikers and Baboons. Although leopards still roam the mountains, the possible sighting of one of these animals is highly unlikely. Maybe one day we will be lucky.
The total distance of the trail is approximately 15 kilometres and rises to 787 metres above sea level at the second viewpoint. En-route to the first viewpoint numerous interesting technical obstacles will be encountered. Some of these obstacles are very technical and will require that you walk the obstacle before driving it. This will ensure that you choose the correct driving line through the obstacle. Continuing to the second viewpoint more obstacles will be encountered where you will be required to walk the obstacle before driving it. This section of the trail, from start to the second viewpoint, will test your driving skills and keep you alert at all times. The descent offers a variety of obstacles, like long rocky descents with short eroded intervals before reaching “Diep Kloof”, a deep sandy donga. Here it is very important to choose the correct driving line, ensuring your safe passage without vehicle damage.
Having negotiated the numerous obstacles during the ascent and descent on the mountain section as well as “Diep Kloof”, the “Sand Hill Challenge” awaits you. Here the correct tyre pressure, good articulation, good sand driving skills and enough power will be required to conquer this obstacle. Fortunately there is an escape route for the drivers that could not make the obstacle. The trail is a good combination of mountain and sand driving and definitely worth more than one visit. Excellent photo opportunities exist throughout the route to capture that special moment.
