DRIVE FROM KLEINMOND TO PELLA

DISCOVER NEW PLACES ALONG 19° LONGITUDE EAST
The lines running from pole to pole are called Meridians or lines of longitude. The zero Meridian is called the Greenwich Meridian and it runs through the Greenwich observatory near London. These lines of longitude run from 0° to 180° East and 0° to 180° West.
What we are planning to do is take the line of 19° longitude East where it runs through South Africa and begin our expedition at the most southern point of Africa where it runs through the town of Cape Agulhas to the point where it crosses the Orange River (Gariep) and becomes the border between South Africa, Namibia and further north also the Botswana border.
Our planned journey will take us along most of the off-the-beaten-track roads, driving as close as possible to the 19° line of longitude East. Take a map of South Africa and follow the 19° line of longitude East and you will see that it takes you through many interesting areas and small towns not normally travelled or visited. Our 4x4 encounters en-route will be determined by the elements and the weather as well as our choice of routes to follow to our destination, the Orange River (Gariep). One of our goals will be to light our evening campfire on the 19° line of longitude East and camp as close as possible to this line. How we achieve this will be one of the challenges we will encounter adding mystique, flavour and excitement to this adventure.
Many route options are available and will be discussed each evening around the campfire when planning the next day’s route. Everyone’s input will be discussed and considered for the following day’s route. It will be a good idea to bring along a good map of South Africa and your GPS. A GPS is NOT a prerequisite for this expedition.
A further point of adventure is the fact that no advanced bookings can be made as we do not know what route or how far each day we will be travelling. This all adds to the mystique of the trip.
Therefore, it is important to be self-sufficient regarding camping gear, food and water as well as braai wood. Looking at the map of South Africa there will be sufficient stops made en-route to replenish food, water, fuel and wood.
To add a further flavour to this expedition we will collect water from the Atlantic Ocean at Kleinmond in the special Cederberg 4x4 calabash and transport it all the way along or as close as possible along the line of 19° Longitude to the Orange River. Upon our arrival at the Orange (Gariep) River we will deposit the water into the river indicating the completion of the trip.

Enough time will be made available after completing the trip for you to purchase dates at Klein Pella and return home on or before Sunday 24 May.

All information supplied in the agenda is given in good faith by Cederberg 4x4 and compiled from the latest information available at the time. The activity times, as indicated on the agenda, are subject to change without notice and at the sole discretion of the guide.
Vehicles : Vehicles with and without low range as well as 4x2 with diff-lock can be accommodated.
Trailers : Off-Road Caravans & Trailers CAN be accommodated on this excursion.

TIME : 09h00 Sharp. Calculate your traveling time not to be late.
Respect your fellow participants and be on time.
FUEL STOPS EN-ROUTE
Sufficient fuel stops will be made en-route eliminating the necessity to carry additional fuel.
CATERING
Everyone must be totally self-sufficient for all meals for the duration of the trip.
ACCOMMODATION
As this expedition is offered as a camping expedition, everyone must be equipped accordingly.
ABLUTION FACILITIES
Ablution facilities cannot be guaranteed at any of our overnight stops en-route. However, we will endeavour to make use of campsites with ablution facilities close to the line of 19° Longitude wherever possible.
GENERAL INFORMATION
• WATER can be replenished en-route.
• WATER - It is always advisable to carry sufficient safe clean drinking water.
• WOOD – Please ensure that each vehicle carry a minimum of 2 x bags of wood.
• WOOD - can be replenished enroute.
• ICE – can be replenished enroute.
• GARBAGE – What we take in we bring out.
• Electricity cannot be guaranteed at the campsites. Bring long electrical extension leads.
• A communal braai area will be determined at each campsite.
• Only one fire permitted for the group
• Consider bringing a portable braai to be used in the communal braai area.
• The days could be warm and the nights cold. Pack clothing accordingly.
• Advisable to wear comfortable closed shoes or boots.
• Advisable to have a broad rim hat and sun block on hand.
• No generators permitted on trips.
VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS
• All vehicles and Off-Road Caravans & Trailers must be in sound mechanical condition.
• Always have your spare keys for your vehicle with you.
• Recovery points fitted to the front and rear on your vehicle are a prerequisite.
• Your own Kinetic/recovery strap and 2 x shackles will be advisable.
• A tyre pump and tyre pressure gauge will be required to deflate/inflate tyres. Pack where accessible.
• Carry a fire extinguisher, which is easily accessible in the event of an emergency.
• Always carry your personal medical kit. Pack where accessible.
29 MHz RADIOS
Communication between participating vehicles on any 4x4 excursion is important for many reasons. It ensures the safety of drivers, passengers and vehicles while on a 4x4 trail, where drivers can communicate with one another as regards to their location and situation, not to mention the interesting information that is shared with participants.
We suggest all 4x4 vehicles that don’t have a 29MHz two-way radio, hire one from us at a nominal fee of
R600-00 for this excursion.
NB: Should you be hiring a 29MHz radio, please ensure that your lighter socket is working. If you intend running more than one item from the lighter socket, be sure to have double adapter handy as well as spare fuses for this excursion.

NB: If your vehicle is fitted with a 29MHz radio, please make sure that channels 1, 14 and 23 are open and working for this excursion.

COST
R6500-00 per vehicle.
R600-00 Radio hire should your vehicle not be fitted with a 29 MHz radio.
BOOKING AND PAYMENT CONDITIONS

• We can only accommodate a maximum of 8 vehicles on this excursion.
• All bookings are made on a first-come-first-serve basis.
• Cederberg 4x4 requires your completed and signed booking form together with your BANK EFT POP (proof of payment) of a 50% deposit for the number of people as per your booking form to confirm your booking.
• Cederberg 4x4 requires on or before Wednesday 6 May 2026 your POP (proof of payment) for the total outstanding balance including radio hire cost if applicable for this trip.
• Your completed and signed booking form binds you to the conditions on page one and two.
• Should you wish to cancel or withdraw from this excursion after returning your completed and signed booking form together with your BANK EFT POP (proof of payment) to Cederberg 4x4, you will be required to find a replacement, totaling to the same numbers as your booking, before any credit or refunds will be considered.
• Should you not arrive at the rendezvous to partake in this excursion or choose to leave the excursion before it officially ends, you will not be entitled to any credit or refund.
